Safeguard Old State Relaunches At Penn State

Safeguard Old State has relaunched for a new academic year. Safeguard Old State — a movement for a more transparent, more student centered university — has with this latest website overhaul taken great strides in our ability to tackle the fundamental issues facing our University.

Founded by then-sophomore at Penn State Thomas A. Shakely in 2006 — now President & General Manager of The LION 90.7fm — and led last year by Gavin Keirans — now the Penn State Student Body President — ours is an organization blessed with achievement and high aims.

It is with our mission in mind that I humbly announce my new role as Executive Director of Safeguard Old State. After my freshman year at Penn State, I became increasingly aware of the need for a new way to tackle the myriad of issues facing our community in Central Pennsylvania.

This desire to see realized a better Penn State led to ever greater interest and involvement in Safeguard Old State, culminating with my selection by the Safeguard Old State Board of Directors as the successor to Gavin Keirans upon his election as head of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) this past spring.

As the year unfolds, I’m confident that Safeguard Old State will continue to mature as we work as a community toward realizing the goal of a truly student centered Penn State. In our mission, we talk about “rekindling the spirit of the classical university in the modern research institution.”

What we mean by that, essentially, is that we are commiting ourselves to rediscover the best aspects of our oldest and most proud traditions while celebrating the greatest achievements of our modern research institution. Taken together, we can blend the best parts of the past and the present in order to achieve a more prosperous future.

Over the coming weeks and months, you’ll see that we’ll be branching out in our advocacy and education initiatives while working to communicate our mission across our Commonwealth.

I encourage you — if you haven’t already — to bookmark the Safeguard Old State website. Keep an eye on our events calendar, check back under the “Resource” tab in our navigation for new content in the coming weeks and stay tuned to our columnists, articles and blog entries on all things Penn State.
