An Eye on the Penn State Administration

What Can Be Said of Penn State’s Board of Trustees?

Cynthia Baldwin, the chairwoman of Penn State’s Board of Trustees, rebuked students in the fall looking to represent student opinion at these open trustees meetings by saying, “There are other avenues to address your concerns.”

By saying this, Baldwin shows her unfortunate misunderstanding of The Pennsylvania State University.  Instead of fulfilling her mission of protecting the university and its stakeholders, she defers to protecting the administration, Graham Spanier, and Vicky Triponey.

Though students have made various attempts at contacting the board members during the last year, Baldwin shows once again that she does not understand the situation on campus: contrary to her assertion, the students indeed have no avenue for redress.

Spanier, Triponey, and their cohorts have long forgotten what it means to be university staff.  No longer are the interests of the students and faculty paramount, instead the reputation and the coffers of the university take capital importance. In the mad public relations spin and recruitment blitzes and the command of the treasury, there is no time to be concerned with student or faculty issues like shared governance or the maintenance of competitive facilities.

So, Baldwin, kindly point out these other avenues of redress: many groups of students have taken issue with the management of our university, and there is much work to be done.  If you can’t be bothered, Ms. Baldwin, tell us: who will listen now?

Aren’t the prestige and success of the university paramount to student and faculty?

The board of trustees isn’t a student forum, students’ false sense of entitlement aside.

Hasn’t student government at PSU been completely inept for at least 10 years? These are the same people you want to have sway w/ the corporate board?
