An Eye on the Penn State Administration

PSU Boosts Minority Enrollment

Today The Dailly Collegian reports:

Penn State rising in diversity rankings
A recent review of Penn State’s ongoing diversity initiatives has shown an increase of more than 1,000 minority students in the last year, resulting in several high rankings for the university.

A midpoint review of Penn State’s second “Framework to Foster Diversity,” which was designed for 2004 to 2009, was released in a report to Penn State’s Board of Trustees Sept. 7. The framework, which was a follow-up to the original plan created in 1998, was created by the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity.

Assistant vice provost Victoria Sanchez said she believes the plan has contributed positively to increasing a diverse environment at the university.

“We’re seeing much more interest and commitment across the campus,” Sanchez said. “I think the framework is an opportunity for everybody to benefit in the community.”

This is good news for Penn State, and I think it’s something to be proud of. It’s encouraging to see greater minority interest in PSU as an expanding and diverse community. Hopefully with an increasingly diverse campus climate, we’ll see a greater tendency for the administration to embrace a truly, organic and grassroots diversity of thought on how to tackle the big problems facing University Park, especially in the realm of Student Affairs.
